What is an Inch?

An inch is a unit of length used in the British Imperial system and the United States Customary system. An inch is equal to 1/36 of a yard. The word “inch” comes from the Old English words ince or ynce, which in turn comes from the Latin word uncia.

The Latin word uncia also gave its name to another English unit, the ounce. Around 1150 AD, King David I of Scotland defined an ynce as the width of a man’s thumb at the base of the nail.

To keep sizes the same everywhere, people used the widths of three men’s thumbs – one small, one medium, and one large – and then divided the result by three. Later, in the early 14th century, during the time of King Edward II, the inch was defined as “three grains of dry barley laid end to end in a line.”

In 1930, the British Standards Institute, in a report entitled Metric Units in Engineering: Going SI, defined the inch as 25.4 mm. In March 1932, the American Standards Association considered using the same value because the U.S. inch was measured as 1/0.03937 mm (approximately 25.400051 mm). Since the values โ€‹โ€‹were nearly identical and Britain had already chosen 25.4 mm, the ASA agreed to use this value on March 13, 1933.

What is a Centimeter?

In mathematics, a centimeter is defined as a metric unit of length that is equal to 1/100th of a meter, the standard S.I. unit of length. Its abbreviation is written as ‘cm’. The word “centimeter” comes from the Latin word centum, meaning one hundred, and the French word meter. This indicates that there are exactly 100 centimeters in 1 meter.

Centimeters are from the metric system, while inches are from the imperial system. On a ruler, you will usually see centimeters marked on one side and inches on the other. One centimeter measures approximately 0.39 inches.

What is a Pixel?

Here are some simple facts about pixels:

  • A pixel is a small unit of measurement that we use in web design and graphic design.
  • We write it as “px” for short.
  • You can convert millimeters to pixels – a pixel is about 0.26 mm or 0.0104 inches (when the resolution is 96).
  • We use pixels so that any element appears the same size on every screen.
  • Think of the old CRT monitors from the 1990s. The smallest dot they could display was about 1/100th of an inch. The word “pixel” comes from those dots.
  • Today’s screens can display much smaller dots, but you need a magnifying glass to see them. Devices may change, but pixels always look the same. For example, a 1-pixel line on a printer looks exactly like a 1-pixel line on a monitor.
  • In digital images, a pixel has a different meaning. It is a small dot in a raster image, or the smallest part of an image that you can change on the screen. In short, it is the smallest part of an image that you see on the display.
  • Other units like em are also used in web and graphic design. You can also check out our other tools related to this px to inch converter.

Why Convert Pixels to Centimeters?

Pixels (px) are the smallest units of digital design – used in CSS, Photoshop, Elementor, Figma, and many other tools.

But pixels don’t represent actual size unless you know the PPI (pixels per inch).

Centimeters (cm) are real-world units. When you print a design or create an actual layout, you need to convert px โ†’ cm correctly.

This converter helps you do that in seconds. It works best for:

  • Print designers creating book covers, flyers, or packaging
  • Web and UI designers checking layouts across devices
  • Developers setting responsive breakpoints
  • Students and teachers using screen design in projects

What are Pixels and Centimeters?

Pixel: The tiny dots that make up the images on your screen. More pixels mean clearer, sharper images. That’s why high-resolution images look detailed.

Centimeter: A metric unit for measuring real objects. In printing, you measure in centimeters rather than pixels to get an exact size.

FAQs

How to convert pixels to inches?

Take the number of pixels and divide it by the PPI (pixels per inch) of the screen. For example, 200 pixels on an 81 PPI screen makes 200 รท 81 = 2.5 inches.

How many pixels are in an inch at 300 dpi?

That’s 300. DPI (dots per inch) and PPI (pixels per inch) refer to the same value but for different uses. Printers work with DPI when printing with dots, while screens use PPI because they display with pixels.

What does px mean in image size?

In digital images, px stands for pixels, which are the tiny square dots that make up a picture. The total number of pixels controls the clarity and sharpness of an image.

How many pixels are in a centimeter?

At a typical screen resolution of 96 pixels per inch, one centimeter equals approximately 37.8 pixels.
